Stage 7 Completion of your piece

As today is the final day we plan to complete everything ,and all that was left is to make sure everything is stuck in place and the syn is placed .

As it is the final day of preparation before we present to the client.
To start the day we figured out what we had to do and all we had left was to include the sun.
Myself and Sophie finally decided to use a tennis ball and painting it yellow , a tennis ball is a good idea because it is much larger then the other balls we used for the planets , which shows the sun is much bigger then the other planets. TW2

We made are way to the school and got ready to present are artifacts to the client.
Sophie and I went first . We had to present it to Miss Harrington and her student council in the juniors. To start are presentation we showed a slideshow of pictures of the process . We told the clients how we made everything , were we got the materials from , how we put it together and the problems we had . They asked many questions and we also asked questions to see if they new what we were on about . Overall it went really well and i think i was confident.
I could of sounded more enthusiastic . Im proud of myself and sophie because we thought it was quite a hard task to begin with but we got done on time, which we didn't think we would because alot of equipment didn't come on time and we never completed tasks due to this problem. Stage 6 - Planning Completion of the artefact

RL2

10/02/10

Together as a group we all sat down in the music room and worked out in are timetables the hours we had free and how we can fit everything in to the time limit . This made it much easier as we knew exactly what we could get what done when and were .SM3

17/02/10

We planned to place the acrylic in place to but it went wrong for sophie and i as are black acrylic didnt show up so we could not cut it out on the lazer cutter . So we had to reschedule and cut out the wood for are base on the scroll saw . We did this because we needed to get stuff done so it would be out of the way .

I cut the wood on the lazer cutter and it ended up not being in a straight line so we decided to not use that piece and start again . IE3
And i can now cut wood straight and at the beginning i couldn't and was scared of the machine.

24/02.10 - more problems

The acrylic still had not arrived so sophie and i decided to paint the planets there colour to use the time up wisely . Though not all the colours of the paints we had orderd had arrived so we could only do just under a half of the planets . Knowing we still had plently more time we didnt want to waste it so we decided to paint the dowles to get that done .CT5, CT6
To improve i could plan ahead incase stuff goes wrong like it did so we new what to do straight away.

03/03/10

Using 2D design i created the concentric circles , though it took us many times to get it right . To check that each planet was the right size and would not be touching each other we took a slab of wood and drilled holes in it so the dowles could fit it and made sure they were the correct distance away from each other we did this by using the same size scale as we will be using on the acrylic . IE2

10/03/10

All the plannets are finally decorated and the acrylic has arrived :D !
We got back on 2D design to check the measurments .At the beginning this was really confusing to work and it kept mucking up , so we kept losing it.
I was ok about the size though sophie was not so keen we talked to sir and decied if we made it in halfs then stuck it together we can make it bigger .
we then planned what we would do on are last day of practical .

17/03/10

Today is the last day of practical we had . The concentric circles are now cut out and ready to stick . We double taped them on top of each other making sure they were perfect .(top)

Stage 5 - Developing ideas

Today we worked on a birdseye view of the artefact . We worked together I drew the circles with a compases and sophie measured the distances with a ruler . TW2, TW3

We have came to a decission on what materials we will be using . We will have a MDF wooden base as it is strong and eco friendly , and on top a piece of acrylic that we can cut a circle out of and place the concentric circles in to .TW5

We have now orderd the differnt sized balls from the website http://www.technologysupplies.co.uk/ we will be using for are plantes and hopefully they should arrive soon .

We came to an agreement of what we will be doing differnet times and weeks so we have this planned out and hopefully will have it finished on time .TW3

In the arfternoon we were hoping we could cut out the black acrylic on the lazer cutter but never got around to it as we never had anoth time .

10/02/10
So we plan to do that this week . Also after half term hopefully the wooden balls would of arrived and we can drill the holes in so the dowles will fit in nicely then paint the wooden balls to the colours of there planets. We can then also cut the dowles to the write size and paint them black to match the acrylic .SM2
17/02/10
After half term we need to order paint and hopefully it shall come this week.

Stage 4-Presentation

Today we had to present are ideas to Miss harrington and the children.
Throughout the day we had a couple of hours to prepare the presentation.
So we planned to research on orreries and how they can be made and what they do. We also needed to plan out what we were going to say to the client .
I took the resarch i had already done on orrerys and the sketches and photocopied them for the client to have. IE1
Though myself and sophie came to an agreement on what idea we wanted to use . So we made a Prototype to give to Miss harrington .( top right)
I then wrote the script for me and sophie so we new what we were going to say and we were prepared .
We made are way to Sarisbury Juniors after lunch .
Each group took it in turns to explain about there artefact. Sophie and i went first .(Top right is Sarah's group presenting their piece) We showed and explained about the materials to the client . We also asked questions we were unsure about and answered the questions they asked us .CT1 As we want to make are artefact to the best we can .
Sophie and i both spoke but i feel i should of been more confident , though i think this was due to the point were i was still slightly confused about the orrery itself .

Stage 3 -investigation

Orreries price range are from ten pound to thousands of pounds , based on the materials and size's used to make it .

The first modern orrery was built by George Graham and Thomas Tompian.
George passed the design on to Instrument make John Rowley to make a copy for Prince Eugene of savoy . John was Soon told to make another for his patron Charles Boyle the 4th , Earl of orrery . Wich was how the device took its name .

The orrerys Purpose is to show tha planets and how they orbit the sun . Though orrerys were not as large as they can be now because they only thought there was 5 planets .

An orrery is normaly a mechanical device , So they can be driven by a clockwork mechanism .
They can come in all different materials such as metal's and gold's . Or a typical easy material wood .

You would normaly see an orrery in a school or in science musiems . As there not really that popular . Because most people just look the planets up on the internet .

The largest orrery was built in 1744 and its still in use today. It was built into the ceiling of someone's living room, and the materials used include; wooden tyres, disks and nails. It is all very accurate with each planets time taken to move around the Sun. These materials were used probably because of availability at the time and the tools they had, for example they wouldn't have had a welder, therefore no metal could be used.

Stage 2- Preperation

We have now been put in to groups and i have been partnered with Sophie :) Togehter we will be working on the space orrery . At first we were all confused on what an orrery was so i did my research . An orrery is a model of our solar system . We new this would be a hard Artefact to make so we really had to look in to this .
Sophie went on the internet and found the distances from the suns and the colours of each planet and created a table . Though we soon realised the sun would look to big compared to the smaller plannets .
I was looking up materials and drawing 3 differnet sketches of how the orrery could look . Though while doing this Sophie was still trying to figure out the sun . So we came to the conclussion we would use wooden balls that come in 5 differnt sizes so we could use them for example the large would go with Jupiter .TW1
I feel i could of been more helpful with sophie towards the sun because she seemed very stressful .TW2

Stage 1-introduction

To start the day of we talked about workshop safety , so we would be prepared for creating are Artefacts. Our Artefact module has to be a physical object that exists.

We met are client Miss Harrington a teacher at Sarisbury junior school .She also had 4 students with her for them to talk to us about what they had in mind we could make . They came up with some ideas such as a treasure chest , orrery and a mosaic of there school logo . She had specific ideas that we had to take note of .
We arranged another meeting with the client so we could talk to her again about are ideas and what we think is best and suitable to the artefacts the client wants .

After the meeting as a group we all discussed differnt ideas on how they could look .
